Past Initiatives: 

• Backpack Initiative
  • filled backpacks for kindergarten students with donated materials
  • the backpacks had a great variety of materials such as notebooks, folders, tissues, and full pencil pouches

Ongoing Initiatives: 

• Legacy Project
  • interviewing senior citizens of the community! Reach out to Shaurya or Arsh if interested in joining
• Duke Mentorship Program
  • tutoring/mentoring elementary and middle school DOCNC members, by using mentorship skills and lesson plans provided by Duke Students
• Big Brother Big Sister summer sessions
  • 4 sessions, every Saturday teaching Chess, Art, Math, and Creative Writing
  • 4 sessions teaching essential leadership skills
• Little Library Installations:
  • installed 4 little libraries in Morrisville and Apex + have 2 more installations to go
• Cedar Fork Program
  • ongoing summer camp
  • contact Anvita if interest in helping out with future sessions

Upcoming Initiatives: 

• Walmart Fundraiser
  • raising funds for Duke Children’s Miracle Network taking place on July 22
  • goal of 1500 dollars, will be matched by Walmart ( total of 3000 dollars)
  • members can bring any unused household items you are willing to donate
• Boomerang Bag Stitching Workshop
  • taking place September 16 (1-4pm)
    • look out for the sign up genius
• Jordan Lake Canoe Fundraising
  • planning on donating 5000 dollars for a new canoe
  • raising funds on Aug 26-27 at Lazy Daze with the goal of 2500 dollars for the canoe that day
• Trivia led by Pragya
  • Pragya hosted a fun round of trivia and her questions were based on global warming & conservation strategies
• Volunteer Center of Durham’s Adrienne Clark
  • talked about the commissioner’s, mayor’s, and president’s awards that can be applied for
  • the requirements for each of the awards depends on the age and the amount of hours each volunteer has collected
  • collected the backpacks we packed earlier in the meeting
