Meeting Minutes for September 12th, 2021 w/ the Team

Happy September everyone! (Stream September by Earth, Wind, & Fire)  Thank you to everyone who came to our first meeting of the year. The samosas, cookies, and cupcakes were amazing, as was the company! 

Here’s what we covered in the meeting:

What is DOC NC? 

• DOC NC, or Dedicated to our community of North Carolina, is a local non-profit that raises funds for a different organization each year. In the past, we have fundraised for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle, Duke PBMT, and the Suhanee Foundation. You can visit docnc.org to learn more!

We have quite a few new members! 

Just to recap, although everyone will definitely do this, every member must do at least 15 hours of service and participate in at least 2 events every year! 

August Recap:

• Lazy Days (8/28 – 8/29) – We raised $1, 396! 
• Peak Fest (9/11) – We raised $1, 311! 
• DOC Talk on sustainability and the economy! 
• ToM Meeting

Upcoming Events:

• September 19th – Field Trip to Phillip Farms from 1-6pm to learn about sustainability
  • This event is completely free for DOCNC members so come, learn, enjoy, and eat! 
• September 26th – Littersweep from 10am – 12pm 
  • A super fun event where you should come prepared to get wet! (I promise you won’t get sprayed too much) 
• October 10th @2pm – DOC Talk on the fast fashion industry and sustainability
  • A monthly discussion (every 2nd Sunday at 2pm) on different topics to further our knowledge on them. These discussions are about 30 minutes to an hour. Will send more details with a zoom link and access to resources as we get closer to the date!
• DOCNC Newsletter (end of October)
  • Communications team is working on this! 
• ToM Art Project (Submissions due 10/8/2021)
  • Art project where kids from grades K-5 are encouraged to participate! The winner will get a banner of their art hung out in Town Hall.

• DOCNC Talent Show (Date – TBD but November)
  • The acts will surround sustainability and ALL members are encouraged to participate! There will be 5 winners, who will each receive a $100 gift card.

Other Announcements: 

• Afghanistan Refugees – Sania ([email protected]) 
  • If you didn’t know there is a crisis in Afghanistan right now. You can read more about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/08/15/world/taliban-afghanistan-news
  • Many people who have fled Afghanistan have left without necessities. Sania proposed donating to local organizations that are helping the refugees. Contact her at [email protected] if you have any questions!
• Chess Course – Anika and Amber
  • Anika and Amber entered a competition to create a Chess Course and were in the top finalists! Amber became the youngest author on the website to be published. If any DOCNC members would like to participate (all the proceeds from DOCNC members will go to DOCNC) email [email protected] to learn more!
