The pressures of being a teen or young adult today are real. We see the silent struggles and tough situations, and we know that navigating them can be a lot. When it comes to substance abuse, these challenges can feel even more overwhelming.
That’s precisely why we created the Lifesavers Campaign. Our goal is to start an open, honest conversation—one that is free from judgement. We’re here to share vital information and resources, empowering you to make informed decisions for your own well-being and to better support the people around you. We believe that by talking openly, we can work together to create a stronger, healthier community.
The Lifesavers Campaign for Substance Abuse Awareness is dedicated to educating our community about the dangers of substance abuse. Our mission is to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves and others. By fostering a compassionate and informed community, we aim to support those struggling with addiction and create a lasting, positive impact. We collaborate with local leaders and organizations to amplify our message, striving to build a drug-free environment where every person feels respected and empowered. Our campaign is founded on the belief that community support and informed choices can change the narrative and help young people lead healthier lives.
The idea for our campaign originated during a DOC NC volunteer meeting where we heard from Elissa Poor, a guest speaker from the University of North Carolina (UNC) Health Department. Her presentation on the devastating effects of drug abuse deeply motivated us to take action. Recognizing the rising rates of substance abuse in our community and its damaging effects on health, brain function, and society, we launched Lifesavers to encourage young people to avoid drugs and embrace their potential.
The primary goal of our campaign is to equip young adults with factual information and practical tools to prevent, identify, and overcome substance abuse. We provide evidence-based strategies for avoiding substance use and accessing help. A core component of our work is building a supportive and knowledgeable community where shared awareness helps prevent and heal from addiction.
In our first two years, the campaign established a strong foundation through education and awareness. We hosted interactive workshops that covered critical topics like recognizing the early signs of substance use and developing effective strategies to resist peer pressure. By engaging with schools and various community groups, we reached a diverse audience of students, parents, and local leaders. Our initiatives included conducting interviews with local leaders, such as the mayors of Apex and Morrisville, during our first year, and producing our own AI-generated video in our second year. These initial efforts were crucial in spreading prevention messages and beginning to raise awareness and encourage open discussion about substance abuse within the community.
This year, Lifesavers focused on expanding its reach internationally to achieve a global impact.
Pragya: “This year, our campaign set out to create meaningful change by uniting voices from different backgrounds and experiences. We started in our own community, engaging with peers, high school students, and teachers to learn from their perspectives. One of the most memorable moments came when I was invited to present my Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign to over 100 underprivileged students and recent graduates at the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI). Their enthusiasm and openness made the experience incredibly rewarding, and it strengthened my commitment to empowering young people to make positive choices.”
Smera: “This year, our campaign focused on creating a global impact by gathering diverse perspectives. We began by interviewing peers, high-schoolers, and teachers in our local community. For me, the highlight was presenting in Chennai, India, to 300 middle and high school students across two school locations. These conversations offered valuable insights into their experiences, deepening my understanding of teen challenges and strengthening the purpose behind my work.”
Pragya: “This year presented me with several challenges that helped me grow as a leader. Managing the campaign remotely from India was a significant obstacle. Coordinating interviews with U.S. students across time zones and dealing with frequent tech issues was demanding, but I adapted and stayed organized. Another challenge was presenting our campaign to a large, diverse audience at NCUI. Public speaking on such a sensitive topic was intimidating, but I prepared thoroughly, overcame my nerves, and delivered a presentation that resonated with the students. Juggling school, volunteer work, and this campaign tested my time management and resilience, but pushing through these moments taught me the value of persistence and purpose.”
Smera: “Like in previous years, a major challenge was convincing schools in India to host in-person talks, as many were hesitant to discuss substance abuse publicly. After highlighting the project’s strong purpose, a school finally agreed. When unexpected travel issues arose due to a political situation, I didn’t give up. I stayed in close communication with the school, and they were very understanding, accommodating the revised dates. This setback became an opportunity to innovate; Pragya and I developed a digital outreach plan for social media, quickly learning video production and content creation. The experience made us more creative and helped us successfully get our message out.”

Pragya: This year, Lifesavers, our Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign, has been a powerful and enriching experience. We’ve gained a deeper understanding of the serious impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities, and it reinforced the importance of raising awareness through open, honest conversations. A highlight was presenting our campaign to over 100 high school students and recent graduates at the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI). Through collaboration with local organizations, we saw firsthand how a shared purpose can amplify our message. The campaign strengthened our sense of responsibility and inspired us to be more proactive, reminding us that even small efforts can create a lasting difference. We’re more committed than ever to continuing this work and reaching more people in the future.
Smera: This year was a truly transformative learning experience, giving me a profound new global perspective on substance abuse. A major highlight was visiting the Akshar Arbol International School in Tamil Nadu during its drug awareness week. I was deeply moved by the students’ interactive and passionate responses, which included powerful slogans displayed throughout the school. This experience was especially meaningful as it reinforced the district’s mission to have individuals like me visit schools to educate students. I also leveraged my video production experience to create a digital campaign for social media. Ultimately, the project taught me that creativity and flexibility can lead to a bigger impact, and the mission of helping others became a deeply personal purpose.
This year, our Substance Abuse Awareness Campaign made significant strides in educating and empowering the community. We expanded our reach and deepened our connections by conducting interviews with teens and recent graduates. We extend our sincere gratitude to Kavya Lamichhane, Shaurya Sharma, Abby Ziemski, Jacob Ziemski, Saarthak Bansal, and Mr. BA for their invaluable contributions to our campaign. Despite geographical distances and technological challenges, we remained united in our mission. With support from organizations like HCL and the dedication of our peers, we transformed our vision into action and sparked vital conversations about substance abuse.
We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our families and for the platform provided by National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) and the Akshar Arbol International School, which allowed us to connect with and inspire students. A special thank you to Anita Punj, the leader of DOC NC, for her continuous guidance and belief in our potential. Her leadership motivates us to aim higher. We are also deeply thankful to Vijay Anand and Ms. Priya (the principal of Akshar Arbol), for their assistance in coordinating these sessions. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our families, who played a humongous role in helping us stay grounded, focused, and motivated every step of the way. Their encouragement has been a cornerstone of our success.
We look forward to a future where we can continue to build a healthier, stronger community for the next generation.
